Macau gambling tycoon Stanley Ho Hung-sun says his stranglehold on casinos will be broken but has warned that opening up to competition too soon will lead to trouble.
Mr Ho - whose monopoly expires in 2001 - says he is hopeful the Government will give him an extension of 'at least three to five years'.
But despite admitting his grip on the enclave's 10 casinos will eventually slip, Mr Ho, 78, still thinks bringing in competitors would be bad for business.
'If there is more than one licensee, there will be fighting between the two licensees. This would be dangerous,' he told the Far Eastern Economic Review.
His comments come a day after Macau Chief Executive-designate Edmund Ho Hau-wah said the Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau's (STDM) exclusive gambling concession might be opened to other operators.
Mr Edmund Ho was speaking amid mounting pressure for the monopoly - which Mr Stanley Ho won in 1961 - to be broken.
