Cable & Wireless HKT and Hong Kong Polytechnic University have launched a technology training and resource centre for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The carrier said it would donate $15 million over three years to the Cable & Wireless HKT Centre of Intelligent Enterprises on the university's campus.
The centre aims to train SMEs to use technology and electronic commerce in their daily operations to make them more competitive in the global economy.
Courses available through the centre include technical training, strategic and market planning, negotiation skills and business protocols.
'Our vision is to facilitate the development of Hong Kong into a major e-commerce [centre] in Asia,' said Norman Yuen Kee-tong, HKT deputy chief executive.
'With the opening of the [centre], we believe we are one step closer to achieving this goal.' With other partners, the carrier is planning further projects targeting the SME community, but there was no set budget for the ventures, Mr Yuen said.
