There is a special return fare to celebrate Christmas Day in Taipei for only $830, but the ticket must be issued by tomorrow, so hurry for that one. Departure is on December 24 and the return journey must be made on Boxing Day. There is also a return ticket to Kuala Lumpur for only $2,720, but the outward journey must be made by December 15. The resort, a short drive from the city in the north of Thailand, is set in eight hectares of landscaped gardens. There are three packages, with accommodation of three or four nights, priced at US$1,580 (about HK$12,300), $2,140 or $2,450 for two. A date in the Dome Starting January 1, visitors to the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, on the outskirts of London, will be able to see 14 exhibitions - covering the mind, the body, the environment, faith, money and just about every other aspect of modern existence. The centrepiece will be the Millennium Show, a 28-minute live performance in the middle of the dome in a sunken arena the size of Trafalgar Square that accommodates 12,000 spectators, 5,000 of them seated. The performance involves acrobats, musicians and visual effects illustrating a story of social and political upheaval and forbidden love inspired by Shakespeare, mythology and the Bible. Some do, some don't over millennium A few months ago, hotels in the Cayman Islands and other parts of the Caribbean, and airlines serving the area, were boasting that the millennium was a sell-out. But as the big day approaches, the bottom has fallen out of the party plans. There has been a deluge of cancellations because of fears over the Y2K bug, and many hotels are being forced to cut room rates. Meanwhile, a trio of senior executives at China Southern Airlines have promised to see in the millennium in the air to endorse the airline's claim to being Y2K-compliant. Its president, Yan Zhiqing, will fly from Guangzhou to Los Angeles on a Boeing 777, and senior vice-president Han Mazhang will board a China Southern Airbus A320 from Guangzhou to Singapore. Vice-president Hu Yunqi will see in the new year on a domestic flight. New reserves in US The United States has named its 55th national park, Gunnison, in southwest Colorado. It is the first new national park since Death Valley and Joshua Tree were established in 1994. The main attraction is Black Canyon, carved over two million years by the Gunnison River. The canyon plunges as much as 850 metres. Meanwhile, Arizona has a new natural attraction. In 1974, cavers wriggled through a tiny hole to discover the Kartchner Caverns, a 2.6-hectare cave system in the Whetstone Mountains.
