Four sons pleaded to be allowed to go to prison in place of their 'caring' father yesterday after he admitted killing his wife in a moment of uncontrolled violence.

  Lee Tung-fat, 67, who battled against a tragic background to provide for his six children, snapped when his wife, Ng Sau-fong, 59, beat him for refusing to give her a massage in the early hours of the morning of April 16.

  One of his sons was adopted by Lee after being abandoned by his parents as a baby and left to die by a mainland river, the Court of First Instance heard.

  'If it had not been for my father I would not be here. I would rather go to jail for him. He was good to us. Any son would do the same,' he said after Lee was jailed for five years yesterday.

  Peter Wan Wah-shing, defending, told the judge: 'All his family are here. In their words he is a most caring father. It is their wish that the court show leniency and impose a sentence which will allow them a last chance to repay their father for what he has done for them.

 'If the sentence can be served by the sons, and of course this is not possible, all of them are prepared to take their father's place.

 'This really is a great tragedy. They beg this court for a chance to spend some happy time with their father before he leaves this world.'  Lee pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Ng, his second wife. He admitted he hit her with a stool and tossed her into the street from their flat. His plea of not guilty to murder was accepted on the grounds he had been provoked.

 A passerby found the body of Ng in Mei King Street, Ma Tau Kok. When police called at the couple's bloodstained home, Lee, wearing only a pair of socks, admitted his guilt, the court heard.

  Mr Wan said Lee, a retired cleaner, had become a house-husband after Ng was hurt in a traffic accident several months before her death.

  Despite his own failing health, Lee gave his wife a massage for three hours between 9pm and 12pm each night, to ease her aches and pains.

 On the night she died, Ng woke Lee, who was suffering from flu, at 4am and demanded another massage.

 'At that time he was feeling very unwell. The deceased began to throw things at the defendant. She even used a bottle to hit the defendant and also kicked him,' Mr Wan said. 'For reasons unknown to him, he suddenly picked up a stool and hit the deceased.'  Mr Justice Peter Nguyen said: 'It is obvious you tried your very best to bring up your six children and you succeeded. Nevertheless, you will have to be punished for taking away another person's life.'
