FURTHER to Mr Chow's letter (South China Morning Post, May 12) I am pleased to hear that Northwest Airlines is considering special mattresses and pillows for infants, such as those offered on Swissair and Cathay Pacific flights.
His excuse that the cardboard boxes presently being used in Northwest's bassinets are up to US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) regulations is lamentable.
As a parent I was disturbed, however, by his inaccurate statement that ''commercial airlines do not carry infant safety belts''.
International regulations do, indeed, stipulate that infants have to be held by an adult during take-off and landing. One of the points of my first letter (Post, May 5) was that this precaution alone seems insufficient.
I was most impressed that Swissair and Cathay Pacific made certain that I was holding my infant and had an infant safety belt which was simply attached to my seatbelt.
I was impressed because these airlines took the initiative to step beyond basic regulations.
