A contest has repackaged the Basic Law with the help of innovative Web sites, poems, animations and T- shirts to make it more lively for young people.

The Basic Law Articles Promotion Competition, organised by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) Student Affairs Office and sponsored by the Basic Law Promotion Steering Committee, aimed to raise awareness of Basic Law articles among students and staff. It also aimed to foster moral education on campus and commitment to the mainland.

Winners were selected from 18 entries based on criteria including the originality of designs, accuracy in interpreting the articles and presentation.

At the prize-giving ceremony, PolyU president Professor Poon Chung-kwong said: 'The Basic Law is closely linked to everyone's daily life in society.

'It is not a complex document exclusively for politicians or legal professionals.

'It covers all areas of our daily life such as the economy, education, culture, sports, religion, labour and community services.' The competition had changed the common perception of the Basic Law as difficult and serious, he said.

The winner was second year computing student Tsui Chun- hung, 21, who designed a Web site targeting primary school pupils. The Web site consisted of two parts. One section gave pupils an overview of each chapter while the other section was a test with yes/no questions.
