A fast-food shop owner was fined $10,000 yesterday after being convicted of possessing three harpoon guns which a friend had given him to repair.
Chin Ting-keung, 44, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of arms without a licence yesterday before District Court Judge Peter Line.
Prosecutor Winsome Chan told the court that the accused, who parked his light goods vehicle in Happy Valley on July 22, was approached by two plainclothes policemen who discovered three harpoon guns and three metal spears in the vehicle.
Chin admitted possessing the three guns without a licence and was arrested, Ms Chan said.
Defence Counsel Ching Y. Wong SC told the court that Chin intended to repair the guns for a friend and did not know he needed a licence to do so.
The guns were for catching fish and were not powerful weapons.
