A former Communist Party cadre in Sichuan has escaped execution by exposing his former boss for corruption.
The Chongqing Supreme People's Court yesterday issued its final verdict on the Rainbow Bridge collapse in which 40 people died earlier this year.
According to Xinhua, the court suspended the death sentence on Lin Shiyuan, deputy secretary of Qijiang county. A suspended death sentence usually means life imprisonment.
The court said the lighter sentence was appropriate because Lin made 'a significant contribution in exposing others'.
The court also ordered the confiscation of Lin's properties and proceeds worth 116,000 yuan (HK$108,000) which he obtained through corruption.
However, it rejected the appeals of nine other defendants who were convicted with Lin.
