The truth about the harmful effects of cigarette smoking, as cited by preventive care specialist William Andress in his letter headlined, 'Tourists would welcome total smoking ban' (South China Morning Post, November 25), cannot be over-emphasised.
I could not agree more with his suggestion that the Legislative Council and the Hong Kong Tourist Association should mandate 100 per cent smoke-free restaurants in Hong Kong.
This is far better than the setting up of a few 'green areas', as proposed by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa.
In fact, it would not only benefit the tourism industry, but be utopia for the whole community of Hong Kong.
I am sure that Hong Kong will win the world's approbation by taking such an initiative. Perhaps an opinion poll should be held before a decision is made.
