More than 4,000 performers from Macau and the mainland took part in a huge parade to celebrate the first day of the Macau Special Administrative Region. The parade ran along the 1.5km waterfront road and ended in the new reclamation area adjacent to the handover ceremony venues. A total of 71 groups of performers from commercial, religious, education, sports and arts sectors in Macau and on the mainland took part in the two-hour event. Led by the national and Macau SAR flags, the floats wove slowly through the large crowds greeting them. Performers in colourful regional dress from areas including Xinjiang and Beijing stood out. Among the floats was one from the Macau civil servants' association, whose participants were dressed in Western costumes - including a team of Harley-Davidson motorcyclists. Hong Kong sent its police brass band to join the event. The Lisboa casino had two floats in gold and purple, decorated with a large card and dice. The parade was organised by non-governmental organisations to celebrate reunification.
