With markets in Hong Kong and the region surging into record territory, one area investors should keep an eye on is mergers and acquisitions.
Last year saw a surge in M&A activity across the region, a factor analysts point to as helping drive markets higher. Companies subjected to takeovers tend to see their share prices surge as the market factors in potential premiums in negotiations.
'M&A creates expectations and activity in the stock market and scrips directly benefiting from it attract investors. Such activities push up the market,' said Paul Pong Po-lam, managing director of Pegasus Fund Managers.
As Asian companies continue to restructure, M&A activity should continue gathering pace - which means opportunities for investors in the new year.
