Recently, there was a case of a surgeon who carried on a conversation on his mobile phone in the middle of an operation.
It is irresponsible for surgeons to talk on the phone about non- medical matters during operations.
Why couldn't he wait until the operation was over? As a surgeon, he should know that a patient's life is in his hands and that any mistake would probably seriously affect the patient. No matter how experienced he is, a surgeon cannot concentrate on an operation while talking on the phone. Besides, the phone itself can interfere with medical equipment.
Sometimes surgeons have to make urgent and important decisions for another patient during operations. Then it is reasonable for them to talk briefly on the phone. A patient's life must be the top priority.
I hope the Hospital Authority takes action to warn others of the consequences of having unnecessary phone conversations during operations. Otherwise, patients' safety cannot be guaranteed.
