A baby born to a mainland couple at Chek Lap Kok would not be entitled to automatic right of abode, officials said yesterday.

The baby - whose parents are not pursuing residency rights for him - was delivered in the restricted area of the departure hall.

His mainland mother, Lin Libin, was waiting with her husband, surnamed Chen, for a 10.29am China Southern Airlines flight to Shantou on Monday.

Mr Chen and his wife - who was 31 weeks pregnant - arrived in Hong Kong earlier that day from Taiwan on China Airlines Flight CI601.

Ms Lin's waters broke on the plane but she did not alert staff on the ground until 9.57am when she was in the transit lounge.

Dr Horace Lee Yan-wang, on duty at the airport clinic, delivered the 3kg baby at 10.07am.

Both mother and boy were taken to Princess Margaret Hospital.
