Hotline to help elderly

Martin Wong

A hotline will open on New Year's Day to take calls from elderly people experiencing Y2K problems.

More than 100 social workers and voluntary workers will be on standby to help those who ring in deal with any problems caused by computer glitches.

'To many elderly people, the Y2K bug is something that they have never heard of,' said Timothy Ma Kam-wah, executive director of the Senior Citizens' Home Safety Association.

'We want to offer them some help if they wake up and find there is no water, no electricity, or the VCR and microwave oven are not working.' Mr Ma said the association received five to six calls from the elderly every day asking questions about the Y2K bug.

The hotline number is 187 8238. It will run from 7am to 1pm on Saturday.
