The 28th speech day of NT Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School turned a new page in the school's history. It was the first time the school had guests-of- honour from the mainland.
They were Professor Hu Xianzhang, vice-chairman of the University Council at Tsinghua University, and Professor Zhu Yuhe, chairman of the History Department at Tsinghua University.
Professor Hu said that in the face of rapid global advances in science and technology, China was placing more emphasis on producing qualified personnel in different areas.
'At all levels of education, students' all-round development is emphasised,' he said.
Professor Hu said tertiary education in the mainland focused on developing the ability of undergraduates and postgraduates and encouraging them to be innovative and to apply what they had learned.
'Tsinghua University is aiming to be recognised as one of the world-class universities while Hong Kong is aiming to be a world city. In both cases, a boost in the quality of education is crucial,' he said.
