I WISH to clarify a quote, from myself, which appeared in the South China Morning Post on May 15.
While mentioning the threat of dredging to Hongkong's marine life, I was not referring specifically to the proposed works at East Lamma. If this were the only ''sand winning'' project in Hongkong, the problem would be on a much lower scale and recovery of marine life would be highly likely to occur, over a period of time.
Our concerns are over the cumulative effect of all dredging projects currently underway or at the planning stage in Hongkong.
No environmental impact assessment was carried out to take into account all of the dredging projects. Unless such a study is completed before any further borrow pits become operational, it could only be seen as a classic case of ''locking the stable doorafter the horse has bolted''.
