The Judiciary confirmed yesterday that it wants the Court of Final Appeal to be housed in the Legislative Council Building when the council moves.
Legco is to be moved so legislators' offices - at Citibank Tower, Admiralty and Central Government Offices - are in the same building as the council chamber.
It is understood Legco President Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai has asked the Legco secretariat to check the amount of space needed for a move.
One member said: 'We have to cater for the scenario where there are more than 60 legislators, say in the year 2008.' However, even if a consensus is reached, it is unlikely the move will take place until 2006.
Earlier this year, various options were put forward, including using the chamber for the now-dissolved Urban Council at Edinburgh Place and reclaiming a piece of land near the Tamar site in Central. None received widespread support.
The court, set up at the handover, is now in the former French Mission building at Battery Path, Central.
