A scheme to import mainland and overseas talent has received a lukewarm response.

By yesterday, only four applications had been filed for the Admission of Talent Scheme since it began on December 17.

'The number of applications is really unexpected,' said Professor Ho Lok-sang, director of the Lingnan University's centre for public policy studies.

The general secretary of Confederation of Trade Unions, Lee Cheuk-yan, said the lukewarm response raised doubts about the need for the scheme. 'The commercial sector may not need hi-tech talent,' he said.

The scheme aims to allow 2,000 talented people from the mainland and overseas to work in Hong Kong.

To qualify, people must apply from their home countries and must have excellent research and publication records.
