HONG KONG liver transplant experts have rejected invitations from mainland counterparts to carry out joint transplants because they are not convinced the organs involved are donated voluntarily.

At least five Hong Kong people have received liver transplants at the Sun Yat Sen University of Medical Sciences Affiliated First Hospital, which SAR doctors claim has conducted operations on patients unfit for transplant.

Two patients have since died and one was hospitalised for three months after returning to Hong Kong suffering from infection. The situation of the two others is unknown.

Dr Lo Chung-mau from the University of Hong Kong's liver transplant team, said it would never recommend patients have a transplant on the mainland.

'The five cases are only those made known to us. We are sure there are other patients who have had similar transplants across the border.

'We do not accept their practice. We have doubts about the sources of the organs,' said Dr Lo.
