Asia-based telecommunications systems consultant and integrator CommVerge Solutions has unveiled a US$10 million expansion plan for the region.

 CommVerge plans to set up 12 offices across the region in an effort to tap telecoms-related business opportunities in the Asia-Pacific.

  'Annual procurement for telecom equipment in Asia is about $50 billion,' said CommVerge president and chief executive Edmund Wei.

 'If we can tap 1 per cent of the business we will be laughing,' he said.

 The company provides consultant services on telecom network design and systems integration.

 CommVerge also acted as a bridge for linking up telecom vendors in the United Status with telecom equipment users in the Asian-Pacific region, he said.

 'We do the shopping for our customers,' said Mr Wei.

 'We go after every brand new model in the Silicon Valley . . . looking for the best breed and integrate them together for our clients.'  So far, CommVerge has secured contracts worth $2 million in the first four months since the company began operating in August, including a 27 million pesos (about HK$5.2 million) deal with Philippine telecom operator Capitol Wireless.

  Mr Wei said the company was now in talks with more than 50 major telecom operators in the region on various telecom-related projects.

 He said he expected CommVerge's turnover to reach $20 million to $50 million by the end of this year, growing to $300 million within five years.

  'Currently we have about 40 staff across the region, we are expecting to triple the staff number by the middle of this year,' said Mr Wei.

 CommVerge recently established its Asia headquarters in Hong Kong. Three other offices in Singapore, Malaysia and Beijing have just begun operating.

 Eight more offices earmarked for Malaysia, the United States, Taiwan, Thailand, the mainland, Australia, India, and South Korea were scheduled to become operational later this year, the company said.

 The company would also consider a listing on the Growth Enterprise Market, Hong Kong's second board, after two years and met the market's listing requirements, Mr Wei said.

 CommVerge's expansion plan was financed by Silicon Valley venture capital funds.
