The new Chinese Civilisation Centre at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) manifests a marriage of hi-tech and traditional Chinese culture.
The Chinese Civilisation Centre was officially opened by famous Chinese literature scholar Professor Jao Tsung-i and CityU president Professor Chang Hsin-kang.
The centre, which features an exquisite combination of traditional Chinese architecture, garden design, paintings and technologically advanced facilities, provides a traditional feel and a rich learning environment.
It was developed to give students a solid foundation and confidence in their Chinese cul ture and a broader cultural outlook.
With a view to broadening students' perspectives, CityU requires all undergraduates to take Chinese civilisation courses.
Professor Chang said while the Government was actively promoting information technology (IT), there was no conflict between technology, art and culture. 'It's good for students to expand their knowledge of the humanities, culture and art,' he said.
The centre's assistant director, Dr Ma Ka-fai, said there were many Web-based teaching and learning tools on the market, but those at the CityU were exceptional because they were personalised and user-friendly.
