About 53.1 per cent of Hong Kong's exports to the mainland in the third quarter of last year were for outward processing.
Statistics released yesterday by the Government also showed that 78.1 per cent of Hong Kong's imports from the mainland were related to outward processing.
These figures roughly matched results for the period from the start of the year to the end of September, when 52.5 per cent of the SAR's exports to the mainland were outward processing related as were 79.9 per cent of its imports from the mainland.
In value terms, $62.55 billion of Hong Kong's exports to the mainland in the third quarter were for outward processing, an 11 per cent increase over the third quarter of 1998.
In January to September, exports to the mainland for outward processing were worth $169.95 billion, a jump of 2.7 per cent.
