The panel proposing a media council to curb privacy intrusion is poised to give journalists more time to hammer out self-discipline guidelines.

The Law Reform Commission's privacy subcommittee is to meet on Saturday after a three-month consultation ended last November.

Subcommittee chairman Professor Raymond Wacks said he would suggest members discuss the proposal in April.

He hoped that would give the industry more time to prepare a voluntary code of conduct.

'How the media carry forward the self-discipline proposal will have a direct impact on our final report. It's fair and logical to give them more time,' the Hong Kong University law professor said.

Under the tentative schedule, the subcommittee will first finalise its proposals on criminalising stalking and harassment, which were released for consultation in May 1998.
