I refer to a letter from Alexander Yan, spokesman for the Hong Kong Ecotourism Association (South China Morning Post, December 26) on country park facilities on Lantau Island.
According to the then Regional Services Department, the flushing water supply at Shek Pik Toilet was temporarily cut due to a faulty electrical pump.
It resumed normal operations after urgent repairs. The toilet at Kei Ling Ha, however, was functioning normally during last year's Trailwalker. The shortage of water may have been due to a temporary delay in the replenishment of flushing water following exceptionally high usage during the Trailwalker.
We disagree with the suggestion to provide a drinking water point between Tai O and Shek Pik as hikers are expected to bring their own drinking water. Fresh water is available at Fan Lau Village. We also fear that building a management centre between Tai O and Shek Pik would merely create unnecessary engineering work.
As for the missing signs, we have installed 35 Country Park signposts on Lantau Trail from Man Cheung Po to Shap Long. Our patrol staff say none of these are missing.
I would be grateful if Mr Yan would contact us if we are referring to different signs.
