GLOBAL Access, a US-based company, is providing 50 to 60 per cent price savings to individuals and companies in Hongkong involved in international telephone calling.
Several companies are marketing the product through independent US contractors in an effort to set-up agencies in Asia.
The service, launched less than three months ago, differs from others on the market because there is no set-up fee, no access charge and no monthly minimum.
Users claim sound and access quality cannot be differentiated from traditional AT&T, MCI or Sprint systems.
In addition, the service offers selective utilisation, which allows callers to choose each time whether or not they access the system.
To use the system, a caller in Hongkong would dial a designated number in New York, let it ring once and hang-up.
With an immediate response, the system in New York automatically rings the Hongkong caller back and upon answering, the Hongkong caller would have a US dial tone and be able to dial the international call directly.
