I refer to the letter by Carl Kjellqvist headlined, 'Disappointed visitors' (South China Morning Post, January 7) regarding millennium celebrations in Hong Kong. He expected to see a spectacular fireworks display from the waterfront in Kowloon, but ended up leaving Hong Kong with despair, disappointment and bewilderment.
I felt the same way about the millennium celebrations. I went out on December 31 hoping to see a fantastic fireworks display, but I was disappointed. I felt cheated when I realised there would not be any fireworks display at the waterfront.
It is such a significant day worldwide and I really wonder why the Government did not celebrate it with a wonderful pyrotechnics show instead of having the display at Happy Valley only.
Was it because at Happy Valley, there were many important people like Tung Chee-hwa, Anson Chan Fang On-sang and mainland officials? Lots of people were cheated by leaflets and advertisements promoting Hong Kong. Not only will the visitor who wrote that letter refuse to come to Hong Kong again, but so will the others who visited.
