MAINTAINING a good healthy diet with regular exercise is important - as much for inner fitness as it is for outer good looks. And the first sign that all is not well, shows in the skin which becomes tired, dull and lifeless after too many long nights, poor diet and lack of care. Skin is a barometer of health and radiant looks come from healthy living and an easy-to-follow beauty regimen. While there may seem to be a confusing array of quality treatments available, all have their special qualities. Some whiten, others perfect, there are fragrance and non-fragranced treatments for super-sensitive skins and those which contain ultra-violet (UV) protection. Here is a small selection: The Estee Lauder daily routine starts with cleansing and toning the skin, before applying Fruition Triple Re-activating Complex, which is formulated to give the skin a softer texture. Fruition has alpha hydroxy acid to re-activate the skin and improve tone and clarity with a resulting lessening of lines and wrinkles. Next, apply Advance Night Repair and Eyezone Repair Gel to protect against UV damage and nourish delicate skin. For combination skin, Estee Lauder recommends Skin Perfecting Lotion, while dry skins will benefit from Time Zone Moisture Recharging Complex. Complete your routine with a good foundation to correct oily or dry skin problems. Just when you thought you could not cram any more bottles and jar cleansers, toners, lotions, potions and wrinkle creams on to your shelves, Clarins has introduced Moisture Lotion Hydration Plus - and not a day too soon. With summer here, this treatment, with its high concentration of plant extracts chosen for their resistance to pollution, will earn its place on the bathroom shelf. Tests on skin exposed to pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke, indicated that those without the protection of Hydration-Plus were renewed at a much slower rate. Hydration tests showed moisture levels up by 44 per cent - even eight hours after a single application. In tests carried out over 10 days, the skin's hydration level, which was at 9.3 per cent on day four, jumped to 18.8 per cent by the final day. Sensitive and weakened skin needs extra care. Guerlain has looked to marine cures and developed Odelys skin care line with phytobium, which combines the essential elements from the biological, vegetable (soothing licorice and regulating ginkgo biloba), mineral and marine worlds. Packaged in aquamarine colours, the line comprises day and night creams, eye make-up remover, foaming cleanser, relaxing cleanser and soothing toner. All are lightly fragranced with fresh herb notes. Shiseido has gone a step further with its beauty line. This renowned beauty house has developed UV White Sun Protect, a liquid foundation with a SPF 18. And to ensure the protection carries on all year round, it has backed it up with a line of UV White products for cleansing, softening, toning and nourishing. And finish with the UV White make-up line which includes a control base. Yves Saint Laurent has reinforced its hydrating line with Hydra Fluide, a cool, gel emulsion which will prove a new ally for combination and oily complexions. The active ingredient in Hydra Fluide works on two levels to release lipid components into the epidermis and carry lipids to the corneal layer. This results in a protective barrier to prevent moisture loss while regulating hydration exchanges within the skin. With a SPF 15 to protect against sun damage and the formation of free radicals, Hydra Fluide is effective in preventing premature ageing.
