The Government will pay for Shue Yan College to upgrade some of its courses to degree level, in the first step towards officially sponsored private higher education.
The Braemar Hill college plans to have three or four of its 12 departments - including journalism, accounting, psychology and counselling, and economics - assessed by the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation to see whether they meet university standards.
The evaluation of the first batch of courses is expected to start in October.
Accreditation fees have not been decided.
The school aims to become a university by having all departments upgraded.
Shue Yan registrar Cheung Kwok-ping said: 'The school management is trying to decide which departments to go for first.
'We are proposing to the Government to have accreditation fees waived.' It is understood a decision on departments will be made in one to two weeks.
