Kidnap gang arrested after ransom paid

Macau police have arrested a suspected kidnapping gang and recovered $2.3 million of a $5 million ransom paid by the victim's husband.

Investigators said four male suspects - three Macau residents and an overstayer from the mainland aged between 28 and 35 - were arrested at several addresses on Monday.

A spokeswoman said all four had confessed to the crime, which is punishable by up to 12 years' jail.

The four, all wearing black hoods, were paraded before reporters at the Public Security Police headquarters yesterday.

Police also displayed the gang's alleged arsenal of weapons, including pistols and knives, as well as the $2.3 million in $1,000 notes.

Under Macau law, suspects are charged by the Judiciary, not the police. The four were scheduled to appear before the public prosecution today.

Police say the gang kidnapped the 52-year-old wife of a local businessman at a car park on Taipa Island on the morning of January 13. Their original ransom demand was $6 million.

The victim's husband negotiated with them and the demand was cut by $1 million.

The woman was released unharmed after the $5 million was paid.

The gang allegedly used part of the ransom to buy a car, which has been seized by police.
