Silence on cash row
THE former Macau governor, General Vasco Rocha Vieira, is remaining tight-lipped despite a simmering row over allegations he used Macau money to set up a Lisbon-based foundation.
A report from the Portuguese capital on Radio Macau yesterday said that General Vieira would remain silent on the controversy until the outcome of an independent inquiry ordered by Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau-wah this month.
The report also said General Vieira's foundation - which has caused uproar among local politicians despite its role to build ties between Lisbon and the former enclave - would issue a statement tomorrow.
A foundation official said the funding was 'completely legal'.
The controversy centres on the alleged transfer of 50 million patacas from the public Macau Development and Co-operation Foundation, which General Vieira headed, to the new foundation shortly before the December 19 handover.
Commentators in Macau and Lisbon have complained General Vieira did a 'business deal with himself'.
