Hengan boss killer made fatal mistake
Wu Hongke had murdered four members of one family and got away with it. The police had lost the trail - until he made a fatal mistake last Boxing Day.
He called the daughter-in-law of one of his victims and asked her: 'Do you want to know the name of the killer? 'If you want to know, you must first pay me one million yuan [about HK$934,700].' This call, recorded by the police, led to Wu Hongke's capture on January 18, ending a manhunt which involved hundreds of officers.
Among his victims was Wu Shijie, vice-president of Hong Kong-listed Hengan International, one of the mainland's biggest makers of sanitary napkins and disposable nappies.
On Thursday, the company presented the police with a reward of one million yuan for its work in finding the killer.
'Wu was one of the founders of the firm in 1985,' a company spokesman said.
'He made a very great contribution. But our production and sales are operating normally.' Investors like Hengan. In a recent research report, Merrill Lynch rated it 'a long-term accumulate'.
