Some people have been hospitalised after eating vegetables from the mainland that were coated with pesticides or pork and fish that had been contami nated with illegal growth drugs and pollutants. Genetically modified (GM) food has triggered calls for compulsory labelling.
While there is no scientific evidence to prove GM food is harmful, environmentalists argue there is also not sufficient evidence to show the release of GM organisms into the environment is safe. Local lawmakers have passed a motion calling for compulsory GM food labelling. The Government says it is studying the possibility of setting up such a system.
