Speaking at the second Racial Harmony Carnival, Secretary for Home Affairs David Lan Hong- tsung paid tribute to the expatriate community for helping to make Hong Kong a world-class city.

Mr Lee said much of Hong Kong's success was due to its racial tolerance, which enabled people of diverse ethnic backgrounds to work and live together in harmony.

He reiterated the Government's commitment to promoting equal opportunities, irrespective of race, gender, family status, sexual orientation or age.

'In the new millennium, we shall continue to direct our efforts to this end. With your support, I am sure we shall foster understanding, concern and friendship among all people, wherever they come from, and build up a more prosperous community,' Mr Lan said.

The fun-filled carnival, called 'New Millennium - Friendship Forever', attracted some 300 participants representing about a dozen nationalities. Wearing national costumes, they entertained the 5,000-strong crowd which had flocked to the Southern Playground in Wan Chai with traditional song and dance performances.
