Eight weeks into his tour, the new United States Ambassador to China, Admiral Joseph Prueher, had his first baptism of fire last week when he was summoned to the Chinese Foreign Ministry and given a stern warning.

China was furious about an overwhelming vote by the US House of Representatives to strengthen support for Taiwan's military.

First impressions suggest that Admiral Prueher, a tall, fit-looking man, is setting out to be more visible than his predecessor, James Sasser, who generally avoided the press.

Speaking to the American Chamber of Commerce last week, Admiral Prueher explained that he had been doing his best to get to grips with his new job by doing the rounds of his consulates, meeting Chinese leaders and discussing issues with as many officials and experts as possible.

'I am convinced the leadership of the People's Republic wants a good relationship with the United States but in some ways they do not know how to do it,' he said.

He also came away with the realisation that getting to the bottom of things in China, such as how many people there are, was not easy. The best figure he could come up with put the population at between 1.25 billion and 1.3 billion.
