People also drew chim, or lucky straws, to find what their fortune might hold for the coming year.

The last day of the Lunar New Year holiday saw a massive return from the mainland (below left). By 11.30pm, around 165,000 people had returned through Lowu, 20,000 less than originally estimated. Seventy-eight of the 92 counters were opened so each traveller was processed within 10 minutes.

Visits to public accident and emergency units jumped 13.3 per cent during the holiday. Most private clinics were closed, resulting in an average 7,470 visits a day to the 14 emergency departments from Friday to Sunday compared with January's average of 6,591.

Pok Oi Hospital in Yuen Long saw the biggest increase, with a 48.6 per cent rise. United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong had the highest attendance with 1,011 visits on Sunday. The increase was similar to Lunar New Year last year.
