Bandwidth service to grow without additional expense for consumers
The SAR's Internet community could see its bandwidth use grow substantially with few additional rising costs for consumers, according to an information technology executive.
Steve Liddell, chief executive of Level 3 Communication Asia, said he expected a strong response in Hong Kong as worldwide Internet protocol connection becomes a hit in Asia.
Level 3 is scheduled to launch undersea cable broadband services in the third quarter.
'Clients that we spoke to are crying out for the service,' Mr Liddell said.
'After all, it is all about cost-saving.' Customers at present pay about US$1,100 per month for the bandwidth service from Hong Kong to the United States.
However, cost is expected to come down significantly as telephone and Internet service providers rush to secure a slice of the market.
