Health officials yesterday swooped on a shop selling condoms laced with an illegal drug that can irritate the skin and increase the risk of sexually transmitted disease.

The raid came hours after the Consumer Council revealed that more than one-third of condoms sold in and near Hong Kong failed tests for leakage or tearing.

The Department of Health seized all the shop's stocks of condoms containing benzocaine, an anaesthetic.

The packaging claims the condoms improve a man's staying power.

Use of the drug is illegal in Hong Kong without permission from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, which the manufacturers of the three brands involved are believed not to have obtained.

The Consumer Council, which identified the condoms as containing benzocaine, said the drug could cause an allergic reaction that broke the skin and made it easier for transmission of diseases such as Aids.
