SAI Kung, Kwai Chung and Yuen Long were hit by flooding yesterday after 65.5 millimetres of torrential rain fell on Hongkong. Also hit was the annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival, held to appease the wandering spirits of people killed by pirates in days of old. The normally bright costumes of the young performers, who were carried around the streets of the island on 18-metre towers covered with buns, were hidden by raincoats. The Royal Observatory issued a thunderstorm warning late last night. But there was some good news, with the heavy rain helping to boost reservoir supplies to about 300 million cubic metres - more than half their total capacity.
