As the Star Ferry tower clock strikes midnight, Urban Council chairman Dr Ronald Leung Ding-bong and Regional Council chairman Mr Cheung Yan-Lung will light a torch to symbolise the launch of the territory's bid to out-exercise Vancouver.

Others expected to illuminate Tsim Sha Tsui's midnight sky include members of the two municipal councils, leading athletes, industrialists and civil servants.

Torches in hand, they will set off together to put into action the event slogan of ''15 minutes' exercise a day, keeps you fit all the way''.

Designed to promote health through exercise, the global event is being held in 34 cities in 20 countries.

However, Hongkong's attention will focus on Vancouver, whose Mayor, Mr Gordon Campbell, challenged the territory to an exercise battle when he visited here last February.
