Insidious

I entirely agree with J. Garner (letter, South China Morning Post, February 9), concerning the active participation of lawyers who profit by defending the tobacco barons in helping to kill more people than road accidents, aircraft crashes, rail disasters and all natural disasters put together every year.

But lawyers are not the only guilty ones.

How about our hoteliers, restaurateurs and bar owners? An insidious campaign is under way to persuade non-smokers to accept smokers in what were previously non-smoking areas.

Under the title of 'Courtesy of Choice', certain hotels, restaurants and bars now claim that by adjusting their ventilation, the air in these establishments is pollution-free, however many smokers are puffing away.

On the face of it this campaign is organised by the Hotels Association of Hong Kong.

In fact, the real force behind this campaign is one of the world's largest tobacco producers, which spends millions of dollars in promoting the idea of tolerance towards smokers.
