Why do you want to pursue an MBA at this time? This is one of the most important questions you are likely to be asked when being interviewed for a programme at a reputable school.

Is it because you want to switch careers? Are there deficiencies in your professional preparation that are keeping you from a coveted promotion? Are you being groomed for a position in top management? Different programmes are designed for different types of people - or, as Steven DeKrey, associate dean of the School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, likes to put it, the same people at different stages in their careers.

There are three types of MBAs, according to Professor DeKrey: full-time, part-time and executive.

Full-time programmes tended to attract younger people, students with less professional experience or those wanting to make a major career change.

Part-time programmes are more popular with students a little bit older. They are content with their jobs but find gaps in their training or experience hold them back.

EMBAs are designed exclusively for those who have reached relatively senior positions. They are hoping to reach the executive suite - if they have not done so already.
