I refer to the letter from Bernard Wijedoru headlined, 'Austria's detractors have ulterior motive' (South China Morning Post, February 12).
It was Britain and France which, through appeasement, failed to prevent Adolf Hitler's annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia in 1938. That eventually led to World War II. The invasion of Poland was an act of unashamed, total aggression by this evil Nazi regime.
The dropping of the atom bomb on Japan was a great tragedy, though Mr Wijedoru's attempt to equate crimes committed by the Axis powers, which includes the Holocaust, with the dropping of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is alarming.
History continues to repeat itself and it is the responsibility of all nations to prevent this.
The emergence of the Freedom Party in Austria has overtones of the rise of Nazism to power, which incidentally also happened through the ballot box.
It is right that individual countries and the European Union should monitor the situation in Austria.
