The Marine Department has reminded ship masters, owners, agents and vessel operators to pay attention to port operations on February 29 and March 1, dates that could trigger Y2K problems. A Marine Department spokesman said all computer-related equipment should be Y2K compliant. 'Vessels which have not returned their questionnaire [distributed last August] must declare their Y2K readiness before permission will be given to enter, depart or move in Hong Kong' in this period, the spokesman said. On February 28 and 29 - from 8pm to 1am the following day - and on February 29 and March 1 - from 7am to 9am - all vessels must carry out proper tests. Any vessels failing to confirm normal operational status might be refused permission to enter or move within port or be required to employ escort tugs, the department said. Ocean-going vessels have to observe safety procedures, follow vessel traffic control centre instructions and maintain a safe distance from other vessels navigating in their vicinity. SHIPPING
