The Cirque du Soleil acrobatic troupe could make Hong Kong the home of its first permanent circus outside North America.

Tourism chiefs are pushing for it to set up near Disneyland on Lantau.

The group - now performing Saltimbanco at the Tamar site in Admiralty - said it was keen to have another full-time home and was happy with the 'fabulous' reception of SAR audiences.

Tourism Commissioner Mike Rowse said the Cirque was the kind of 'world-class' attraction Hong Kong should be trying to lure. The Hong Kong Tourist Association said negotiations with the troupe were under way.

'It's the sort of facility that we in Hong Kong ought to aspire to have,' Mr Rowse said. 'It would be a permanent asset for our tourism industry and we'll be considering sites and talking to various people.

'If they were interested in coming here and we were able to make the arrangements, an obvious place to put it would be close to Disney.' Mr Rowse said another circus would be approached if Cirque, based in Montreal, did not agree.
