Windsurfing heroine San San has picked up this prize seven out of eight times since it was first awarded in 1991.

But last night her stranglehold was loosened when the cycling ace was selected as Hong Kong's top sporting personality of 1999.

'I'm a bit surprised to win. I think what mattered in the end was that I had more chances than San San to win something worthy last year and this must have counted,' said Wong.

The 26-year-old cyclist qualified for the Sydney Olympics at the World B Championships in Uruguay, when he won the 40-kilometre point race.

This was judged enough to give Wong the top prize.
