I refer to the letter from Pedro Reizz headlined, 'Immigration officers have attitude problem' (South China Morning Post, February 18), commenting on the working attitude of our officers.
The Hong Kong SAR welcomes visitors and its Immigration Department is committed to providing a courteous and efficient service at all immigration control points.
The service-cum-control nature of immigration work requires immigration officers to serve the public and exercise statutory powers at the same time. In line with international practice, the department examines visitors upon their arrival to ensure that the SAR's interests and security are protected. Let me emphasise that immigration officers are trained to treat all people impartially, irrespective of their sex, race, nationality, religion or status.
We attach great importance to the provision of a good customer service to our visitors.
In addition to the induction training for new recruits, regular training and seminars are also given to our front-line staff who are constantly reminded that all visitors should be treated in a fair, courteous and considerate manner. Any valuable suggestions for further improvement of our service are welcomed.
I hope this clears up your reader's doubts.
