News of the dangers of smoking has pushed a lot of people to quit, but there are still many people who are smoking and a lot of them are teenagers. Statistics show that teenagers who start smoking do so between the ages of 10 and 16. Most of them are regular students who tried smoking out of curiosity. At the beginning most only try a few puffs, but they quickly fall into the habit and become addicted. Some teenagers are rebellious and want to stand out from the crowd. They do this by wearing T-shirts with provocative words, swearing and then many turn to smoking. Those who are less confident also turn to smoking because they are eager to be accepted. They are easily persuaded by others to begin smoking and they do not consider the health risks. The media should take some of the blame for its promotion of smoking. The heroes in comics and movies are often shown holding a cigarette. The Government should make a real effort to discourage smoking. After all, the future of Hong Kong is in the hands of our younger generation.
