Police were called to Hung's five-storey shop in Sharp Street East behind Times Square when he returned at about 2am and found the valuables missing. He had left the shop at midnight.

Hung, whose affair with socialite Teresa Po Wing-kam became the talk of the town, has a shop from the ground floor to the fifth floor and lives on the top floor.

A police spokesman said jewellery and gold ornaments including diamonds, jade rings, bracelets, diamond necklaces and crystal items were stolen from the ground floor and sixth floor.

Hung said the stolen items could fetch about $6.5 million on the retail market.

Officers said thieves might have climbed on to the roof of his building from an adjacent block and then entered the shop by prising open a window.
