Police and stadium officials have promised not to be heartbreakers when American pop diva Mariah Carey hits town next week on her Rainbow world concert tour.

Her fans have been assured that they will be able stand up and dance following an emergency meeting between concert promoters, the Singapore Tourism Board, stadium officials and police entertainment licensing officers.

But they must not get too carried away.

'People will be able to dance in the area directly in front of their seats, but not in front of the stage, in the aisles or exits, on chairs or cause any danger to themselves or others,' said Carey's promoter, Stephan Ludwig.

To sit or not to sit has been the debate raging in Singapore since ushers controversially forced concert-goers to remain glued firmly to their seats throughout last month's pop concert by Culture Club.

Their action came despite the Government having lifted its unpopular 'no-standing' ban in July 1998.

At a crisis meeting to clarify the rules, worried promoters have since been reassured that dancing is allowed but that organisers will be made responsible for their crowds and risk forfeiting deposits if they misbehave.
