Just take the Geoff Lane-trained first season import Bear With Me who took the first of two trials on the Sha Tin all-weather yesterday.

Bear With Me won in Listed company at New Zealand's premier track of Ellerslie as a two-year-old and is said to have cost a good few bob.

However, one noted New Zealand form judge has reportedly compared him unfavourably with Tambora Star on his domestic form but another says his form is comparable with that of Tony Cruz's exciting youngster from the Shakey Isles, Super Century, who is likely to hold his own in Class One sprints here.

Opinions couldn't be much more polarised than that. The truth is probably somewhere between the two and from his trackwork it has to be said that the omens are with Bear With Me's connections rather than against them.

The son of Al Akbar also ran nicely on debut when he would have finished considerably closer in the Sha Tin 1,200-metre sprint won by the much improved Plenty-Plenty but for being significantly checked in the home straight.

He certainly looks a decent enough type and yesterday sat behind the habitual leader Sharp Shooter before kicking clear to win by a very comfortable four lengths under Douglas Whyte.
